Mandarin Oriental The Landmark, Hong Kong

More than a decade after reimagining the hotel, Joyce Wang Studio returns to renovate the guestrooms, spa and public spaces of Mandarin Oriental The Landmark, Hong Kong. Located in the heart of Central, the hotel offers a retreat from one of the city’s densely built districts.

The design draws inspiration from the historic mansion houses of Hong Kong’s New Territories, once frequented by the Tai Kwuns of a bygone era. Through a carefully curated blend of architecture, art, and materiality, the hotel is envisioned as a contemporary pied-à-terre, offering guests an intimate connection to Hong Kong’s cultural heritage, and layered sense of place.

Stepping in from the bustle of Central, guests are welcomed into a dramatic double-height space where a rich palette of stone, timber, textured wallcoverings, and custom églomisé glass creates an immediate sense of calm. A sculptural Irish pewter staircase rises through the foyer, complemented by warm red stone accents and curated artwork that evoke the experience of arriving at a grand, storied residence.

The reception, concierge, and lounge spaces are conceived as a contemporary interpretation of a lived-in mansion. Sculptural plinths, artwork niches, and carefully curated objects create moments of pause throughout the guest journey, while bespoke furnishings and layered materials lend a sense of warmth and familiarity. Inspired by the character of historic Hong Kong residences, the spaces balance the grandeur of arrival with the intimacy of home.

Located just off the reception lounge, Communal reimagines the hotel’s iconic MO Bar as an all-day gathering space led by Michelin-starred Chef Richard Ekkebus. Inspired by the spirit of a family living room within a grand mansion, the design combines patinated brass, verdigris and bronze finishes with fluted jade-toned tiles and warm tangerine upholstery, creating a welcoming setting that transitions seamlessly from morning espresso to evening cocktails.

The renovation encompassed the hotel’s L450, L600 and L900 suites, alongside its guestrooms, creating a refreshed residential experience rooted in Hong Kong’s architectural heritage. In collaboration with Fromental, Joyce Wang Studio developed a bespoke wallcovering inspired by reflections captured in the windows of historic mansion houses and the weathered textures of their façades. Custom carpets reinterpret Hong Kong’s cityscape through abstract patterns that reference the rhythm and density of the urban landscape. Paired with lightened timber flooring, cracked gesso wall finishes, and handcrafted detailing, the guestrooms create a layered and intimate retreat that celebrates both the city’s energy and its quieter histories.
