Genso, a spirited dining and entertainment destination at the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Sha Tin Racecourse, designed to immerse guests in the vibrant world of horse racing culture. Conceived as a retro fantasy land, Genso comes alive with a bold, eccentric-urban aesthetic – fusing culinary creativity, live racing energy, and playful nostalgia to attract a new generation of racing enthusiasts.
Set across two distinctive floors, the space invites guests on a layered, experiential journey. On the lower floor, the Fudo Town Food Hall captures the
animated atmosphere of a market, serving the best of Japanese street food in a lively, casual setting. As guests ascend to the upper level, the experience enters a more refined realm at Izakaya, where a dramatic suspended walkway of neon-clad floating islands connect pockets of intimate dining poised above the action below.
Rooted in the iconic streetscapes of Tokyo’s Golden Gai, the electric neon of Blade Runner, and the dynamism of manga; the studio’s design reimagines the racecourse as a cinematic cityscape. A hive of activity, the space evokes an intrinsic feeling of adventure and discovery in its guests, as they explore the eclectic food and drink offerings and arcade-style activities, while offering ever-changing perspectives of the horse racing below.
The space is brought to life by a dizzying dream-like palette of teal and aqua, set alongside bold orange and peach tones. Warm timber finishes, bold patterned upholstery and mid-century geometric details define the scheme, while dramatic ceilings are enhanced by a rhythmic array of lanterns and the neon floating islands, referencing the graphic nature of neon street signage. Intricate ceramic tiles wrapping the columns allude to building facades, further shaping the immersive aesthetic of the cityscape.
